Berry honours Riharna Thomson

Tommy Berry has honoured the memory of fallen trackwork rider Riharna Thomson, after guiding Canberra-trained mare Rocket Commander to victory in the Wenona Girl Quality (R4) at Randwick.

“I’m a bit emotional with this win. For everyone in Canberra, I just want you to all know that we’re all thinking of you down here,” Berry said.

Thomson lost her fight for life on Friday after suffering major head trauma during a routine track gallop on Tuesday morning.

She wasn’t far from everyone’s thoughts at Randwick; Berry - who's wife Sharnee is from Canberra - paying tribute to a young life taken way too soon.

“All my thoughts and prayers go out to Riharna Thomson’s family and friends and everyone at home on the track, I know how tough it is and we’re all here for you, everyone in the racing community,” he said.

“It’s a big family up there and it was very fitting that this horse won on the day.”

The Matthew Dale-trained Rocket Commander ($6) just held off Hieroglyphics ($3.90), with Zestful ($5.50) finishing third.
